The 2017 Grand Marshal: Danny Head
The 101 Wild West Rodeo Committee announced Ponca City businessman Danny Head will be the 2017 rodeo parade’s grand marshal. The parade will begin its eastward march on Grand Avenue from Oak Street beginning at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 10. The annual kid’s rodeo, located on the Ponca City Library lawn, will immediately begin after the parade.

“I’m honored to be named as Grand Marshal of this year’s parade,” Danny said. “The 101 Wild West Rodeo is one of Oklahoma’s longest-running rodeos and pays tribute to the Miller Brother’s 101 Ranch, Oklahoma’s ranching history and the great sport of rodeo.”

Brad Beaty, rodeo committee sponsorship chairman, calls Head his “ace in the hole.” He says, “any time the rodeo has a need, Danny always steps up to take care of it.”

Head is owner of the local restaurant, Danny’s BBQ Head Quarters. Formerly known as Head Country Bar-B-Q Restaurant, the name was changed in 2016 after Danny and wife Carey sold their operating interest in the similarly named food manufacturing business, Head Country Food Products, Inc.

Born in Shidler, Danny is a 1965 graduate of Shidler High School. Growing up, Danny proved to be a natural businessman with a successful hay-hauling business and frequently assisted Osage County ranchers with cattle working chores. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army National Guard and earn a degree in agricultural economics from Oklahoma State University.

In 1977, Danny began making Head Country Bar-B-Q Sauce in Shidler where he was owner/operator of an oilfield construction business. In 1980, he sold out of the oilfield and went into barbecue sauce manufacturing full-time with a move to Ponca City. Since then, Head Country has helped to promote its hometown of Ponca City around the world.

Since 1990 Danny has been an enthusiastic supporter of the 101 Wild West Rodeo as a perennial chute heaven sponsor and provider of the annual rodeo barbecue dinner — a fundraiser for the rodeo committee. Danny and Carey also served on the rodeo committee and served as representatives to the PRCA convention in Las Vegas, Nev.

Danny invites rodeo fans and those new to the sport to take in a rodeo performance or two. The fast-moving, family-friendly evening celebrates riding and roping skills which helped build Oklahoma and the American West.

The 58th annual 101 Wild West Rodeo will begin its 3-night run June 8 and conclude June 10. Performances begin at 8 p.m. and are held at the rodeo grounds located at Ash and Prospect. A family barbecue, free with rodeo ticket purchase, as well as dancing to live music after each rodeo performance are among the many extra activities.
